“Brainspotting taps into the body’s natural self scanning and self healing abilities.”

– Dr. David Grand

Susan Denison is a member of the Rocky Mountain Brainspotting Institute, an organization that supports brainspotting practitioners and clients. She has been developing her brainspotting practice since 2009, and is a certified brainspotting practitioner.

Brainspotting (BSP) is a therapeutic process developed by David Grand, Ph.D. in 2003. Brainspotting is an excellent focus for treating trauma, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges. BSP allows patients to resolve trauma-related conditions without having to experience the event at the same level of intensity. As your BSP therapist, Susan will facilitate the discharge of the trauma and help regulate your nervous system towards homeostasis.

Brainspotting decreases:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • phobias
  • addictions & cravings
  • PTSD symptoms
  • anger management issues

Brainspotting is can also be used to treat medical conditions, such as:

  • chronic fatigue
  • auto-immune system challenges
  • fibromyalgia
  • headaches
  • preparation and recovery from surgery
  • head injuries/TBI

The Brainspotting Process:

Dr. Robert Scaer, a neurologist, states that the location of the brainspot “is related to the area or region of the patient’s experience or perception of the traumatic event and represents procedural memory for that somatic experience.”

A brainspot can be located by finding an eye position where the painful or negative emotion is most apparent. There are also methods for discovering the location of a brainspot through the calmest areas of the body. Determining a brainspot’s location is done through awareness of reflexive eye and body movements, such as blinking, swallowing, yawning, and head or body twitches.

Biolateral sounds are used in the practice of brainspotting. These sounds can be produced by music, tones, or even nature. The sounds are moved from ear to ear in order to activate each hemisphere of the brain. The use of biolateral sounds calms the sympathetic nervous system (the fight/flight/freeze response), while engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, which relaxes the body and mind.
